East Carroll Parish Big Buck Banquet 2011 - 2012
The 6th Annual East Carroll Parish Big Buck Contest was a huge success this year. There were 98 deer scored this season, which was down from last year's 135. The high water of the Mississippi River last spring and the drought of the summer played a huge role, causing the deer to seemingly be scarce.
Despite the numbers being down there were some quality bucks scored. The three biggest bucks scored for the 2011-2012 season were 173 3/8 (Taylor Fortenberry), 168 5/8 (Neil Martin) and 151 6/8 (David Sullivan). Ashley Robertson took first place in the archery division with her deer scoring 134 5/8. Ashley is the first youth to enter the archery division in contest history. There were 35 plus youth hunters in the contest this year. It's always good to see the young people of our community getting involved in the sport of hunting.

Our banquet was held again this year at the Lake Providence Community Center. Despite our deer numbers being down and a conflicting basketball game; 300 plus folks came out Feb. 2, 2012 and a good time was had by all. Live music was provided by the "Close Enough Band". Food was sponsored by John Culpepper and staff of Our Place Restaurant. A special thank you to Jennifer Fortenberry for heading up the serving of the food.
First, Second, and Third place prizes were given in all categories. Our GRAND PRIZE this year was the best since the contest began. Thanks to our sponsors, the grand prize was a Browning X Bolt 270 Short Mag with scope. The Nikon scope was donated by Jessie and Shane Ard of Jessie's Citgo in Oak Grove.
Don Green of Rut n Strut Taxidermy attended again this year. He gives a free mount to the biggest buck entered in the Women's Division. Make sure to visit Don in Kilbourne and look at some of his great work.
Special thanks goes out to the Lake Providence Community Center, Hosie Layton and crew for the hard work getting the building ready. Donnie Meadows was the M.C. again this year; Great Job Donnie!!!!
Let's not forget to thank Nathan Dye and John Kelly for scoring all the deer, David Frith for passing out door prize tickets and thank you to all the hunters and people of the community for supporting the contest each year. The East Carroll Parish Big Buck Contest is for the people of our parish. It is one of the largest events to take place each year. As we have said in year's past, we are grateful to all who make it successful.
We are already looking forward to the 7th Annual Event. Have a great year and we will see you again in October.
